Every year we rent a cabin with few other families somewhere where snow is at least a possibility and spend a few days celebrating New Year, sledding, x-country skiing, and generally playing in snow, playing board games, and talking.
This painting originated in Bear Valley, during one of those New Year trips, when we decided to rent snowmobile with trailer and take a ride with kids.
It depicts a cold and sunny day. The sky is dark ultramarine, contrasting with deep cover of pristine snow quieting every step made. Someone’s summer house is buried up to its roof in untouched white crispy covers and backlit pines throw an ornamental shadows on sparkling crust.
If you stop, you can almost sense the silence full of forest, sky, sun, and snow. And the only sound is your breath.
